Hello, greetings and welcome to NWCS into the Dark podcast where tonight we explore the shadows between folklore and fear, the strange and the unexplained.
Tonight we're unlocking one of the most chilling modern legends of the paranormal.
The Black Eyed Children.
For decades, stories have surfaced of children appearing on lonely roads, knocking at doors or approaching parked cars late at night.
They look like ordinary kids, except for one thing.
Their eyes are pitch black.
Witnesses describe feeling an overwhelming sense of dread, as if letting them in would mean something terrible.
And these children?
Lost souls, demonic entities, alien hybrids, or just an urban legend fueled by late night imagination.
In this episode we'll dive into the origin of the Black Eyed Children phenomenon, explore first hand accounts and compare them to unsettling figures in folklore like Slenderman, the Grinning man and Shadow People.
By the end of tonight's journey, you may think twice about answering a knock at your door after dark.
Greetings and welcome to NWC After Dark podcast.
[00:02:29] Speaker D: Hey, Danny, what'd you think of that commentary?
[00:02:31] Speaker E: It's a little. A little chilly. I feel like wet myself
[00:02:38] Speaker B: in the studio. This evening we have myself. We've got Rob.
[00:02:42] Speaker D: How you doing?
[00:02:43] Speaker B: We've got Tab.
[00:02:44] Speaker A: Aloha.
[00:02:46] Speaker E: I like Ahoy.
[00:02:47] Speaker B: Why do you keep switching it up?
Ahoy.
[00:02:50] Speaker A: Ahoy.
[00:02:51] Speaker E: Okay, yeah.
[00:02:51] Speaker B: What happened to Ahoy and Danny?
[00:02:55] Speaker E: Oh, yeah, yeah, there we go.
[00:02:58] Speaker D: And Scott.
[00:02:59] Speaker A: Scott.
[00:03:01] Speaker E: Did we ever nail that down?
[00:03:02] Speaker D: No. No.
[00:03:04] Speaker E: I'm giving up.
[00:03:05] Speaker B: I'm giving up. I don't even care anymore.
[00:03:07] Speaker E: We'll figure that out one of these days.
[00:03:09] Speaker B: Hello. Hello. Yeah, hello. Greetings and welcome.
[00:03:12] Speaker E: Howdy. Howdy Duty.
[00:03:15] Speaker D: He looks like Howdy Doody.
[00:03:17] Speaker E: No.
[00:03:19] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:03:21] Speaker E: a little bit.
[00:03:22] Speaker B: We're off to a great. A great.
[00:03:24] Speaker D: I'm just kidding.
[00:03:25] Speaker B: Always. We've been on always. We've been on air for 19 seconds and Rob's already busting ball. Let's see. Jesse's not here.
[00:03:32] Speaker D: No, wait a minute.
[00:03:33] Speaker B: Jesse's not here. So Rob is taking over.
[00:03:36] Speaker E: It's just kind of how it is.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: Yeah, he's taking.
[00:03:37] Speaker E: Someone always has to fill in, right?
[00:03:39] Speaker A: Yeah. New bully on the block.
[00:03:41] Speaker D: Don't put me in the same category as that.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: You are, you're.
[00:03:45] Speaker E: Where is he anyway?
[00:03:46] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:03:47] Speaker D: Mia, who is Jesse?
[00:03:49] Speaker B: He said he's doing something with his kids.
[00:03:52] Speaker D: Kids, whatever.
[00:03:53] Speaker B: I know.
[00:03:53] Speaker C: Jesus.
[00:03:54] Speaker E: Lies, all lies.
[00:03:56] Speaker D: He has their whole lives ahead of him. Jeez.
[00:03:59] Speaker B: So we're gonna. We're gonna see if Rob's gonna morph into that role.
[00:04:03] Speaker D: I do not think so.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: Scott, anything new with the group? Anything new?
[00:04:08] Speaker E: Oh, what is new?
[00:04:10] Speaker D: Well, I tried paddle boarding for the first time today.
[00:04:14] Speaker E: Oh, how organ of you.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: And you did not.
[00:04:18] Speaker D: I put my ponytail up and I had a selfie stick and my kombucha in a little.
And my.
[00:04:27] Speaker E: Do you wear Birkenstocks when you do that too?
[00:04:29] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. And then I had.
[00:04:30] Speaker B: Who wears Birkin?
[00:04:33] Speaker E: That's weird.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: They're very comfortable.
[00:04:36] Speaker D: And then I had my feline on the board too. No, I didn't.
[00:04:43] Speaker E: And this is after you offloaded it from your Subaru Outback, right?
[00:04:46] Speaker D: Oh, yeah,
[00:04:50] Speaker B: Subaru.
[00:04:50] Speaker E: Very nice. Where. Where did you go? What. What part of the world?
[00:04:55] Speaker D: A little.
I think I was probably a man made Lake island. No, it. It was called Turner Lake or something.
[00:05:03] Speaker A: Turner Lake. Yeah.
[00:05:05] Speaker D: Not. Not to pinpoint us where we're at, but.
No, it was.
[00:05:10] Speaker B: Why are you afraid of somebody locating us? Like a crazy fan?
[00:05:15] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah.
[00:05:16] Speaker B: A crazy fan.
[00:05:17] Speaker E: Three of our listeners.
[00:05:18] Speaker D: Yeah. No, but it was. It was actually kind of a calm lake. I guess it was a perfect, perfect spot to try it out. I did fairly well, so that's new for me. Well, what about you, Danny?
[00:05:32] Speaker E: What is new for me? I don't know that I have anything new necessarily. I keep. I feel like I keep threatening to get on board with these new gadgets like drones or 360 cameras. But I'm still in research mode, still in research phase.
[00:05:49] Speaker D: So I will tell you, I had a 360. The.
One of the name brands. 360.
I'm not gonna mention any instant names, but copyright things. But anyway, I had it. I got it for my motorcycle. For recording.
Yeah, more for safety because.
Yeah, for commuting and stuff. And the battery just didn't want to last.
But, you know, I was traveling at the time. About an hour to work and an hour home. And it would last.
It would last a whole.
Yeah, it would last all the way there and then about halfway home, which was inconvenient.
[00:06:35] Speaker E: Interesting.
[00:06:36] Speaker D: But anyway, just a side note on that, I. I see a lot of people have them plugged in while they're recording, so maybe that's. That's what you gotta do.
[00:06:43] Speaker B: We talked about that on the last episode.
[00:06:45] Speaker D: Did we?
[00:06:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:06:46] Speaker E: A battery Pack or something?
[00:06:47] Speaker A: Yeah. Will it work with the battery pack?
[00:06:49] Speaker D: I don't know. I don't. I'm sure they're probably. That's probably a complaint. And they probably improved it.
[00:06:54] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:06:55] Speaker A: I know some devices, when you plug them into a USB battery, bank it, they won't work while it's charging.
[00:07:02] Speaker D: I will say, though, that particular camera, though, they had a instant, like you. It would kind of. You could do an instant video and it would kind of go through and do its own thing on how it focuses on particular items throughout the video.
You know how as you're going, it's facing you, but then you see something.
Yeah. So that was pretty cool if you.
[00:07:32] Speaker B: You know, like a magic eyeball.
[00:07:34] Speaker D: Yeah, whatever. But no, it's the camera. It was amazing. I love. I loved it as far as the functionality of it. It's just the battery I didn't like.
[00:07:43] Speaker E: Interesting. Interesting.
[00:07:44] Speaker B: We got a new drone.
Oh, yeah, that thing.
[00:07:48] Speaker D: Yeah, it. Thing is nice.
It does everything.
It does everything.
Yeah, it's. You could almost fly itself.
[00:08:03] Speaker E: What type of drone is it?
[00:08:07] Speaker A: Yeah, what brand is that one?
[00:08:08] Speaker E: Oh, oh, yeah, yeah.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: Remember Fujimonga?
[00:08:13] Speaker D: Have you. Have you flown it lately?
[00:08:14] Speaker B: Fujimoto?
Not since the maiden flight. The maiden flight.
[00:08:20] Speaker D: We need to play around with that. He also your old one. Did you say that one is not right.
[00:08:27] Speaker B: It won't. It won't connect anymore to the.
[00:08:30] Speaker E: What?
[00:08:31] Speaker D: Oh, that. That's right. It's not.
[00:08:32] Speaker A: The company bricked it.
[00:08:33] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:08:34] Speaker D: It's not supported anymore or anything.
[00:08:36] Speaker E: The.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: The company went out of business a
[00:08:38] Speaker A: couple years ago, and then when they go out of business, they brick all their devices.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: So apparently.
[00:08:42] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh.
[00:08:44] Speaker B: I mean, it was 10 years old or better, but it was.
[00:08:48] Speaker D: It was top of the line back then for sure.
[00:08:50] Speaker B: For sure.
[00:08:51] Speaker D: Wow. Okay.
[00:08:52] Speaker B: All right. Anything new? Anything new with the group?
[00:08:54] Speaker D: That's what we were talking about.
[00:08:55] Speaker B: Danny. Anything new?
He's researching devices tab.
[00:09:02] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: Not really. I just got back from California.
My mom came into town.
That's about it.
[00:09:09] Speaker E: Oh, nice.
[00:09:10] Speaker B: A lot of flies. A lot of flies in this video.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: What's with the flies?
[00:09:14] Speaker D: I need to get my zapper.
[00:09:15] Speaker B: It might get that. It might be Rob's smell.
[00:09:18] Speaker A: Oh, he did bring a smell.
[00:09:20] Speaker B: He did.
They seem to be. It's got an evil lap floating all over the smell.
[00:09:26] Speaker E: Good luck with all of that. That looks. That looks very. It looks like you're going to need Narcan after you use whatever that is.
[00:09:33] Speaker A: Oh, boy.
[00:09:34] Speaker B: Have we decided who's gonna. Have we decided who's Going to be doing the.
On the.
All of the podcasts that we have in the queue and like the.
[00:09:42] Speaker D: We have like 16 in the queue now, don't we?
[00:09:45] Speaker E: We don't have that many. Only two, right? Only the last two.
[00:09:48] Speaker D: No, but no, we had. We still had two prior, didn't we?
[00:09:53] Speaker B: Yeah, maybe not.
[00:09:54] Speaker D: I think there's. I don't know.
[00:09:55] Speaker E: I thought we only had the last two. Antarctica and.
[00:10:00] Speaker B: Yeah, spirits at Ste.
[00:10:01] Speaker D: I know. I thought there we had some in the bank.
Tab, are you looking right now?
[00:10:06] Speaker A: For what? Sorry, I. I can only do one thing at a time.
[00:10:09] Speaker B: Oh, he's doing his research.
[00:10:10] Speaker A: I'm doing my research.
[00:10:11] Speaker D: Oh, man.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I think there's only two. I think there's only two I have. But after this weekend there's gonna be like 16.
[00:10:19] Speaker D: Well, we gotta look at the unedited folder.
[00:10:23] Speaker B: You guys want to talk about little black eyed children?
[00:10:27] Speaker A: Not really.
[00:10:29] Speaker E: Hey, that's before that point.
[00:10:30] Speaker B: Oh, that's kind of the topic.
[00:10:32] Speaker E: Sorry. Actually, Scott, yes, I do have potentially new thing.
It's almost September, which means almost time for Tab's birthday, Rob's birthday, everybody's birthday.
[00:10:46] Speaker A: Yeah, Scott's birthday month.
[00:10:48] Speaker B: It's my birthday.
[00:10:51] Speaker E: Yeah, it's almost time for Halloween Horror nights.
[00:10:55] Speaker B: I'm not even talking to you about that, Danny.
It's not even a discussion.
[00:11:00] Speaker E: Will you just understand that I'm trying to plan now.
[00:11:05] Speaker B: No, I don't want to go.
[00:11:06] Speaker E: He doesn't want to.
[00:11:07] Speaker D: He doesn't want to get.
He doesn't want to get left at the ball again.
[00:11:12] Speaker E: I don't want to play. I don't want to now for that potential. So we can.
[00:11:15] Speaker B: I don't want to go.
[00:11:15] Speaker E: We can. Instead of, you know.
[00:11:18] Speaker D: He doesn't want to show up to the prom alone again.
[00:11:21] Speaker B: I've given you. I've given you two, three months advance notice. You're like, yeah, absolutely, I'm gonna be there.
[00:11:28] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:11:30] Speaker B: Speaking of which, we don't have to wait. We don't have to wait until October, September anymore.
[00:11:34] Speaker E: Let's get it booked right now.
[00:11:37] Speaker B: Las Vegas, my friend.
[00:11:39] Speaker E: I saw that.
[00:11:40] Speaker B: Universal Horror Nights all year long.
[00:11:44] Speaker D: What?
[00:11:45] Speaker B: Year round?
[00:11:46] Speaker D: I'm all in year round.
[00:11:49] Speaker B: Year round.
[00:11:51] Speaker D: We could do like a long weekend, but they only.
[00:11:53] Speaker A: Las Vegas is a ghost town right now. So I'm sure they're trying to do anything they can to get people to come back.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: It a ghost town.
[00:12:00] Speaker A: I don't know. The economy, it's just a ghost town, huh?
[00:12:06] Speaker E: Well, let me just tell you.
[00:12:07] Speaker D: Probably get an air flight for like $12.
[00:12:10] Speaker A: There you go.
Actually, they'll give you money to fly.
[00:12:14] Speaker B: I. I'll think about it. Danny.
[00:12:15] Speaker E: I'll think about right now. Just. Just let me throw a tickler at you. There's eight announced haunted houses this year. The first one five nights at Freddy's.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Never heard of I don't know.
[00:12:27] Speaker E: What?
[00:12:27] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: It's a video game.
[00:12:29] Speaker E: We're gonna have to do a.
An episode on that or something. We'll figure it out. The terrifier.
[00:12:35] Speaker B: I'm not sure.
[00:12:36] Speaker E: Terrifying.
[00:12:36] Speaker B: I don't know what that is either.
[00:12:37] Speaker E: Oh, that's a classic Fallout.
[00:12:40] Speaker D: Oh, yeah.
[00:12:41] Speaker A: Video game.
[00:12:42] Speaker B: I think that's like video game, post apocalyptic something. Yeah, I'm kind of.
[00:12:46] Speaker E: I'm gonna save the best for last. The horrors of Wyatt 6. That's not the last one, by the
[00:12:53] Speaker B: way, but never heard of that.
[00:12:56] Speaker E: The other is Scarecrow music by Slash. Never heard of scarecrow monstrous 3. The ghost of Latin America. Monstros. I said that wrong. Monstrous and the last two.
Ready for this? Yeah. Poltergeist.
Restless spirits have overrun the infamous A cemetery from the classic film last but not least, Jason universe.
The iconic horror villain Jason Voorhees is coming for you.
[00:13:33] Speaker B: Jason Voorhees. I'm not. What is that?
[00:13:36] Speaker E: Are you kidding me?
[00:13:37] Speaker D: What?
[00:13:38] Speaker E: Are you guys ready to move on?
[00:13:39] Speaker D: Come on, Jason.
[00:13:45] Speaker B: That's about all I remember was the amazing sound effects.
[00:13:48] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:13:50] Speaker B: Poltergeist. That's a good lineup. You know what's good about that lineup is that typically they regurgitate the same ones and then they'll add like one or two more. Those. Those all sound pretty new.
[00:14:03] Speaker E: Exactly. I've not seen those before.
[00:14:06] Speaker B: Yeah, that might be kind of fun.
[00:14:08] Speaker E: All right, well, the ticklers out there.
[00:14:11] Speaker D: Nice. I'm liking it. This is all where in Vegas.
[00:14:15] Speaker E: This one is from Halloween.
[00:14:18] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:14:18] Speaker E: I think Universal.
[00:14:19] Speaker B: Hollywood. I think the one in Vegas only has like three.
[00:14:23] Speaker D: Three, but still, that's a. That's. That's a great lineup.
[00:14:26] Speaker E: Yeah.
Yeah.
[00:14:29] Speaker B: So the legend of the Black Eyed Children is one of the more modern entries in paranormal folklore, blending urban legend, creepy pasta, and classic supernatural tropes.
So in regards to the origins of the legend, it's relatively new. Nobody really even talked about the Black Eyed children until about 1996 when there was a journalist named Brian Bethel.
[00:14:56] Speaker A: That was quite a while ago, Scott.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: I mean, in the grand scheme of vampires and. Well, yeah, you know, Bigfoot and.
[00:15:05] Speaker D: 30 years.
[00:15:05] Speaker B: It was 30 years ago.
[00:15:07] Speaker D: 30 years.
[00:15:08] Speaker A: That's 30 years ago. We're just getting really old.
[00:15:10] Speaker E: Van Piers.
[00:15:11] Speaker B: Seems like yesterday. Vampirs.
It was when first became known, when journalist Brian Bethel of Abilene, Texas described a chilling encounter with two children who had entirely black eyes. They approached his car asking for a ride and he reported feeling an overwhelming sense of dread before driving away and leaving the kids there.
[00:15:34] Speaker A: What a jerk.
[00:15:35] Speaker B: Yeah. His story circulated online and became the foundation for the phenomenon. I guess the question I have is 1996, how much online stuff was there in 1996?
[00:15:47] Speaker E: When was the Internet created?
[00:15:50] Speaker A: Wow.
Well, Al Gore invented.
[00:15:53] Speaker B: Al Gore invented that, didn't he?
Around the same. Around that same time, similar stories began to surface on early Internet forums and paranormal websites with people describing children with pale skin, monotone voices and jet black eyes attempting to gain entry into cars, homes and even hotel rooms.
[00:16:14] Speaker A: Not even safe.
[00:16:15] Speaker D: October 29, 1969.
[00:16:19] Speaker B: That's when the Internet.
[00:16:21] Speaker A: Well, government Internet. The government Internet we're talking about.
[00:16:25] Speaker B: So when did the intra web like.
[00:16:28] Speaker D: Yeah, probably when was it like available to us?
[00:16:33] Speaker A: I would say 91, 92.
[00:16:36] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:16:38] Speaker A: Probably small groups of people were dabbling.
[00:16:41] Speaker D: I would say I didn't really get myself personally. About 93. 4 was when I first was able
[00:16:50] Speaker B: to get online and look all the porn.
[00:16:52] Speaker D: No, I was. What was the.
The computer version of.
[00:16:59] Speaker B: I know you can no topic real quick.
[00:17:01] Speaker D: It was when it was the dictionary. You'd be able to look up encyclopedia and everything and everybody thought it was so cool. You'd be able to look up anything on encyclopedia.
[00:17:10] Speaker B: What other stuff did you look up, Rob?
[00:17:13] Speaker D: A couple remedies for rashes.
[00:17:17] Speaker B: Like what do you mean? You know what kind of rashes?
[00:17:20] Speaker D: Eczema. Eczema.
[00:17:22] Speaker B: How do I clear up? When you were 16.
[00:17:26] Speaker E: How do I clear up these things on my person, these bumps.
[00:17:33] Speaker B: Anyway, so some of the common characteristics of these black eyed children is that they looked like normal children or teenagers, but with very pale skin and entirely black eyes. There's no whites, no irises, just completely black eyed, just hollow.
Their behavior, common characteristics and the behaviors from the reportings again say that they often knock on doors, approach cars or stop people on the street.
And they're always asking to be let in, often giving strings excuses like we need to use the phone, we're lost, whatever.
[00:18:09] Speaker E: Sounds like downtown Portland.
[00:18:10] Speaker B: Yeah, right, right.
Witnesses can consistently describe an intense unnatural feeling of dread or danger when they're encounter. When they encounter them.
And much like vampire lord, black eyed children are said to need permission to enter the home, vehicle or personal space.
I got flies just.
[00:18:36] Speaker D: I know
[00:18:39] Speaker A: I can't work under these conditions.
[00:18:41] Speaker B: I know. It's warm in here.
[00:18:42] Speaker D: We got, we gotta move the body outside.
[00:18:45] Speaker B: I'm sorry, don't we have a.
So some people feel that they're demonic or supernatural because of those things. Some suggest they're demons or spirits in disguise, preying on human fear and hospitality. I mean, who doesn't want to let a little child into their house?
Some believe that they have extraterrestrial connections. Others link them to like alien hybrid children.
Pointing out to the unnatural eyes and psychic dread that they cause.
Skeptics suggest mass hysteria, sleep paralysis, visions or intense age. Myth making fueled the legend. The spread of Black Eyed Children tales mirrors how urban legends adapt to new technology.
And there seems to be some sort of a vampiric parallel. Their need for permission to enter youthful disguises and hypnotic dread align them with the traditional vampir myths that's basically just kind of updated for modern times. People kind of getting tired of telling the vampire stories because no one believes it. So they, they talk about the Black Eyed Children.
And since that, since the late 1990s, the Black Eyed children have appeared in horror films, books, podcasts and documentaries.
And they've really kind of become a quick fixture in paranormal lore alongside Slender man, shadow people and like the Grinning man for example, and other Internet born myths, sightings continue to be reported worldwide, often following a similar pattern to the original story, to Mr. Bethel's original story.
So just, you know, to me it kind of just seems like one of those things that just, you know, it was one person told the story and then the Internet took off with it and kind of gained, kind of broke, kind of broke the ice, gained speed
[00:20:47] Speaker A: like these people have experienced it. But one guy came forward and, and then it kind of snowballed from there. Yeah, other people coming forward sharing their
[00:20:58] Speaker E: or read some other potential theories kind of feeding off what you said, Scott, you know, another group of beings that
[00:21:07] Speaker B: are reported to have, I'm sorry, beans or beings, paranormal beings, beings that are
[00:21:15] Speaker E: reported to have an unsettling aura and or need for invitation are demons or malevolent spirit. There are some that believe they can, they might also be related demons and, or malevolent spirit, lower level spirits potentially that test the human willpower supposedly. Then of course the higher decent beings, beings like I said, and then also reports of potentially being alien human hybrids.
[00:21:46] Speaker B: Fascinating.
[00:21:46] Speaker E: Of course there's some UFO researchers that believe that because of their shape of their black almond shaped eyes that they're very similar to the classic grays. We've Spoken of before. Interesting or interdimensional Beings.
[00:22:03] Speaker B: There's a lot of it.
Beings.
[00:22:06] Speaker E: Let me make sure I get this right.
Yeah, interdimensional, Nice. They're, you know, with their off behavior could reflect more. A core imitation of humanity. And so maybe they're glitching. When they come in contact with the human race, they're trying their best to mimic our behaviors.
[00:22:24] Speaker B: So technically, Danny, you're a blackout adult.
[00:22:29] Speaker E: Mine's are brown. Scott.
[00:22:32] Speaker B: Well, I'm. I'm referring to the incident here at the ranch.
Oh, yeah.
I wasn't referring to the color of your skin. Come on.
I'm referring to.
[00:22:45] Speaker E: My eyes are brown though.
[00:22:46] Speaker B: I'm referring to the ranch.
[00:22:48] Speaker A: Yeah, the black eye moment.
[00:22:50] Speaker B: Yeah, the black eye. Thanks.
[00:22:52] Speaker E: Thanks to my fabulous designated driver for keeping me safe.
[00:22:57] Speaker A: Angelo. Shot.
[00:22:58] Speaker B: By the way, do you have the next hoot nanny in your calendar? And if so, what's it called?
[00:23:04] Speaker E: And the next hoot nanny is themed Black Guy Weekend, September 13th.
[00:23:09] Speaker B: So it's in your calendar under Black Eye Weekend.
[00:23:12] Speaker E: Yeah, that's what it's saved as. Yeah.
[00:23:16] Speaker B: What do you got exactly? What do you got?
[00:23:18] Speaker C: Rob.
[00:23:19] Speaker D: But he come to me for.
[00:23:21] Speaker B: Because you're the man with the answers.
[00:23:23] Speaker D: I. I don't have any.
[00:23:24] Speaker A: Let's just. Let's just talk about it.
[00:23:26] Speaker B: So I have a feeling that the people that want to just group talk about it.
[00:23:31] Speaker A: Why not?
[00:23:31] Speaker B: Didn't. Let's discuss it. Didn't do any sort of homework. Do you know what. What is the topic of the podcast town?
[00:23:38] Speaker A: Black Eyed Children.
[00:23:38] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:23:39] Speaker D: Boom, mic drop.
[00:23:42] Speaker B: He had to look at his notes.
And Rob's googling shit on his phone.
[00:23:47] Speaker A: I kind of like this spin on it though. Have you guys ever heard of sleep paralysis?
[00:23:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
Oh yeah, we talked about that with Rob's witch.
[00:23:58] Speaker A: I guess there are people reporting the Sea Hag.
[00:24:00] Speaker B: The Boo Hag.
[00:24:00] Speaker D: The Boo Hag.
[00:24:01] Speaker B: Yeah.
I can't remember much. Why do I remember stuff like that?
[00:24:05] Speaker D: That's weird.
[00:24:06] Speaker A: I know. That is really weird.
[00:24:07] Speaker B: My memory's so bad.
[00:24:08] Speaker D: How long ago was that? Seriously?
[00:24:10] Speaker B: That was years ago when you.
[00:24:11] Speaker E: That was episode two with Band Aid man.
[00:24:14] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:24:14] Speaker D: Oh yeah.
[00:24:16] Speaker B: Urban Legends. That's right. Ye.
[00:24:21] Speaker E: Episode two or three. Yeah.
[00:24:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:24:22] Speaker C: Wow.
[00:24:23] Speaker B: Crazy that.
[00:24:24] Speaker E: Not to be confused with Odag. That's a different thing.
[00:24:27] Speaker B: They don't even appear. Those older episodes don't even appear. They're not.
[00:24:31] Speaker A: We haven't figured out. I mean, they're there. They just don't show up on the auto list.
[00:24:35] Speaker B: It's like.
[00:24:36] Speaker A: So if you go to the web. Go to their website. It's listed there. They just don't want on cast publish them.
[00:24:43] Speaker E: Oh, we should redownload those because I don't see them in the Google Drive
[00:24:46] Speaker B: either because it starts at like 25.
[00:24:49] Speaker E: Yeah, I think probably.
[00:24:50] Speaker A: I think I got them all set up.
[00:24:52] Speaker B: I agree, Danny. I think that, you know, that's probably good because our first. Our first several. I mean, not like we're great now, but our.
Our first few episodes were.
[00:25:03] Speaker E: We have made it a lot longer and further than some podcasts have. What are we up to now? 50 something.
[00:25:09] Speaker B: 50 something.
[00:25:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:25:10] Speaker B: And why didn't. Why didn't we do something 50 fabulous for 50?
Like, I feel like that's a big milestone because now we have to wait till like a hundred.
[00:25:23] Speaker D: 75. 75 significant.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: Well, what about if we do a big 54 blowout?
[00:25:29] Speaker D: 54?
[00:25:30] Speaker B: Yeah, like, whoa. It's 54.
[00:25:33] Speaker D: What? 54 though.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: Yeah. What? I don't know. That's iconic. Is it? I think Danny froze.
[00:25:39] Speaker E: Did I?
[00:25:40] Speaker D: No, he was just here.
[00:25:41] Speaker E: It glitch a little bit, but I think it was.
[00:25:44] Speaker D: It was just taken aback by your.
[00:25:46] Speaker E: I am back with you.
[00:25:48] Speaker B: Okay, I'm sorry. I think. I think Rob rudely cut you off tab. What were you saying?
[00:25:53] Speaker A: What about the sleep paralysis? Yeah, what does that do with. Well, people are seeing these black eyed children in the sleep paralysis. So can you imagine seeing this freaky child approaching you and you can't move?
I mean.
[00:26:09] Speaker E: No, thank you.
[00:26:10] Speaker A: So, yeah, that would be my nightmare right there.
[00:26:13] Speaker E: I mean, maybe we should do an episode on sleep paralysis, but. Yeah, that would.
[00:26:17] Speaker B: I think so too.
[00:26:18] Speaker E: The. The sleep paralysis.
There's one in the room.
[00:26:23] Speaker A: Scott's got the phone up with a picture of a black eyed child.
[00:26:28] Speaker E: Oh, boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Yeah, well, we're all in trouble now.
I don't want to. Do you see the two behind me? I've got.
[00:26:37] Speaker A: Yeah, he got two. Two children just kind of on each
[00:26:41] Speaker E: shoulder and potentially the Slender man back here.
[00:26:43] Speaker A: Yeah, I saw that.
[00:26:44] Speaker D: No, yeah, that. That actually looks pretty cool. Danny. I. I took a picture of you on the, you know, took a picture of the TV with.
[00:26:53] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:26:54] Speaker D: With you on the background and your background.
[00:26:57] Speaker E: What is the tie in, by the way, to the. The Slender Man? I. I hear there's some tie into that. I don't know if you guys. I've heard much about it, but I
[00:27:06] Speaker A: didn't look into that. I mean, I know of the Slender Man. I just don't. I think he's tied to children in some way that he kidnaps. Kidnaps them or kills them or something. So maybe these are the children coming back from. I'm just guessing, coming back. Slenderman's already gotten a hold of him and now he's the. They're his minions. That's a theory.
[00:27:27] Speaker E: Is there? Is there? Yeah, and maybe, maybe the Slender man is the one that created the Black Eyed children, abduct them.
[00:27:36] Speaker A: Right.
[00:27:36] Speaker E: Praise on their fears and. And so forth.
So both though are considered Internet age myths that kind of popped up myths. Allegedly. I'm doing my air quotes here.
[00:27:48] Speaker A: But.
[00:27:49] Speaker E: And they, they kind of blur the line between urban legend and manifestation. Manifestations of collective beliefs. Almost kind of like the. What do we call that? The.
Oh, what is the guy. The Mandela effect.
But yeah, it's interesting, the potential relationship. Maybe, maybe the Slender Man. I'm seeing a collabo movie here. Maybe a. A Slender man and a Children of the Corn, something like that Were Children of the corn or the BCK children. Yeah, the BE case.
[00:28:19] Speaker A: I know that would have been before the 90s. Right, but that came out.
[00:28:23] Speaker E: Right.
[00:28:24] Speaker A: So yeah, maybe that was the Kickstarter.
[00:28:27] Speaker B: Also relatively similar to the Grinning Man. You guys familiar with the Grinning Man? Kind of like the Slender man banding tall.
[00:28:34] Speaker E: Yeah,
[00:28:37] Speaker D: rip it off.
[00:28:38] Speaker B: Tall. Yeah, the Grinning man was first.
First Talked about in 1966 by some Jersey boys who said that they saw a tall like 6 foot 7, lanky build. Basically described him as inhumanely thin. Which kind of goes along with Slender Man.
[00:28:53] Speaker E: I get that all the time.
[00:28:56] Speaker B: Dark, dark tanned olive skin with no nose or ears.
[00:29:00] Speaker D: Yeah. No facial features.
[00:29:01] Speaker B: And the, the most striking features that he's got this huge fixed grin. And these Jersey boys described him as wearing green, which kind of sounds a lot like the Riddler. Not the Riddler, but the Joker.
[00:29:13] Speaker A: The Joker?
[00:29:14] Speaker B: Yeah, from Batman with the. Could you imagine purple? Could you imagine that guy was real.
[00:29:20] Speaker E: I wonder if that's where that smile movie came from. Smile one and smile two.
[00:29:24] Speaker B: Maybe.
[00:29:25] Speaker E: What about shadow people?
[00:29:28] Speaker B: They could be the parents of the Black Eyed children.
Or.
[00:29:32] Speaker E: Or they're interesting. These crisscross, these enlightens or the shadows
[00:29:38] Speaker A: are the precursor to the children. So you see the shadows and then
[00:29:43] Speaker E: the children, they lay the foundation. Right? Shadow people. The ones from the movie Ghost. Do you remember the movie Ghost where the, the creepy things came out of the.
[00:29:54] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, that was cool.
[00:29:56] Speaker A: They would take evil souls.
[00:29:59] Speaker E: Yeah, that always, always kind of stuck with you, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I still can't watch that movie by myself.
[00:30:10] Speaker A: When was the last time you tried to watch it?
[00:30:15] Speaker E: No, no. No comment. No comment.
[00:30:17] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:30:18] Speaker E: Whatever happened to the reporter? Do y'. All. I wonder where this went after, you know, the reports and. And everything.
[00:30:27] Speaker B: He wrote a book. They just kept the. The stories just kept popping up and popping up and popping up. But I think. I think, you know, if. If you want to look at this from like an investigative standpoint, I think one of the easiest ways to sort of debunk these black eyed children is that there's no. I mean, if you look up photos of black eyed children on the Internet, you're going to see some pretty creepy photos. But all of them are. They're clearly just photoshopped. And nobody. Nobody has a photo of a, you know, snapped a photo. So there's a lot of people that are reporting sightings. But in today's day and age, I find it really difficult to believe that there's not a single video, there's not a single photograph.
Just stories. Stories with absolutely no proof.
[00:31:15] Speaker A: Experiences.
[00:31:16] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, even with Bigfoot. Believe in Bigfoot or don't believe in Bigfoot, there's some pretty compelling photos and video, many of which is not fake. I mean, there's. There's lots of fake stuff online for sure, but there's also some legitimate photos of big creatures roaming through the woods. That's not fake. It's real.
[00:31:37] Speaker A: And then you got AI, which is making it even harder because some of these AI images or videos are getting pretty. Pretty.
[00:31:45] Speaker B: Danny, when was the. Speaking of the woods, when was the last time you were in the woods?
[00:31:52] Speaker E: I don't even know what a woods is.
[00:31:58] Speaker B: That. That video is up. Did you see that?
[00:32:01] Speaker A: It is
[00:32:04] Speaker B: not, not, not. I don't even know what the woods is. But that same truck.
[00:32:07] Speaker E: Oh, yeah, with the Bigfoot.
[00:32:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:09] Speaker E: Encounter where you. Yeah, I just saw that.
[00:32:12] Speaker B: Looking for the butterflies.
Anyway, Ladybugs. We seem to have gotten off track a little bit.
How come your. Your light's not on tab.
[00:32:22] Speaker A: Can you hear me?
[00:32:23] Speaker B: I can hear you, but your lights.
[00:32:24] Speaker E: Are you on air, tab? Are you on air?
[00:32:27] Speaker D: No.
[00:32:32] Speaker A: Now, it's not the right color. I'm working on it.
[00:32:35] Speaker B: It's got to be red.
[00:32:36] Speaker E: So are we taking a trip to Abilene? Is that what we're saying? We need to go verify.
[00:32:41] Speaker B: No.
[00:32:41] Speaker E: What's going on?
[00:32:42] Speaker B: No, no.
[00:32:43] Speaker E: No one wants to go to Abilene. How close is that to Jesse?
[00:32:47] Speaker B: I don't know. Somebody looking up Ruskin.
Abilene, Texas. And Rusk.
[00:32:52] Speaker D: Well, if we go there, we could Bury Jesse's body.
[00:32:56] Speaker B: Whoa, whoa. What? That was.
[00:32:59] Speaker A: See, he's turning into a bigger bully.
[00:33:02] Speaker E: That's called evidence.
[00:33:03] Speaker D: It's Jesse.
[00:33:04] Speaker B: Unbelievable.
[00:33:05] Speaker E: Maybe the black eyed children tapped him on the shoulder.
[00:33:08] Speaker D: Jesse's a bully. You know it.
[00:33:09] Speaker E: What's the. What's the final verdict?
[00:33:12] Speaker B: You're sort of taking off. The fine on distance is four hours. Four hours and 30 minutes from Jesse. So we could send him there since he's such a douche and doesn't show up on our. On our.
[00:33:25] Speaker E: On the spot reporter.
[00:33:27] Speaker D: Yeah, there's no need to name call.
[00:33:29] Speaker C: Geez.
[00:33:30] Speaker E: I think that it's worth a while making a road trip down to good old Abilene and let's see if we can recreate that instance.
[00:33:38] Speaker B: Bro, if we take a road trip. I do not want to go to Texas. I do not want a road trip to Texas.
[00:33:44] Speaker E: Yeah, once you.
[00:33:45] Speaker D: Once you're in Texas, you never get out. You're like you. You're like in Texas.
[00:33:50] Speaker A: It just goes on and on and on.
[00:33:52] Speaker D: Days it takes.
[00:33:53] Speaker E: That's all right.
[00:33:54] Speaker D: Days to get out of Texas.
[00:33:55] Speaker E: It's all right. It could be worse.
[00:33:57] Speaker D: Well, yeah.
[00:33:58] Speaker B: You guys ready for a. A musical interlude?
[00:34:01] Speaker D: Interlude.
[00:34:02] Speaker E: Let's do it.
[00:34:03] Speaker D: Do tell.
[00:34:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:04] Speaker E: Let's do this.
[00:34:13] Speaker F: They knock at your door when the night is cold.
Whispers of stories that were never told.
Eyes like shadows empty and wide.
Children of silence nowhere to hide.
Into the dark where secrets creep voices call when the world is sleep don't let them in don't eat their stare. The black eyed children are waiting there.
Soft little hands with a hollow plea.
Asking for shelter, asking to be. But once you answer, once you agree you'll never escape that you can't unsee.
Into the dark where secrets creep voices call when the world's asleep don't let them in. Don't meet the stare the black eyed children are waiting there.
Knock knock.
Will you let us in?
Knock knock.
It's where it begins.
[00:35:48] Speaker B: I got a new game, Danny.
[00:35:49] Speaker E: Oh yeah?
[00:35:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:50] Speaker D: Oh yeah.
[00:35:52] Speaker B: It's called Knock knock. Oh yeah. You wanna. You wanna know how to play my new game?
[00:35:57] Speaker E: Tell me about it.
[00:35:59] Speaker B: Well, the three of us are going to be creepy black eyed children and we're going to knock on your door and we're going to do our very best to convince you to let us in. And you're going to have to make a determination if you're going to let us in or not.
Simple game called Knock knock.
That's following the theme of this. Black Eyed children. I thought that was pretty Creative.
[00:36:22] Speaker E: What if I've already decided?
[00:36:25] Speaker B: So.
[00:36:25] Speaker D: Yeah. No, thank you.
[00:36:27] Speaker B: I'm going to go first.
[00:36:29] Speaker E: I gotta go first.
[00:36:32] Speaker B: Knock, knock.
[00:36:34] Speaker D: He's not gonna even answer the door.
[00:36:38] Speaker C: It's just me.
I've got some gumbo I'd like to.
[00:36:45] Speaker D: It's in his pocket.
[00:36:47] Speaker C: I'd like to come in. If you could just let me in. I've got some chicken and some gumbo.
I got some waffles with extra butter and syrup. In fact, I have 47 plates of waffles.
[00:37:03] Speaker E: Pancakes, Pancakes, pancakes.
[00:37:09] Speaker C: Lots and lots of pancakes with extra butter and syrup. I'd just like to come in for a moment if I could, please.
Extra butter. Did you hear that?
It stir up lots and lots.
[00:37:25] Speaker E: Am I fighting immediately or after?
[00:37:28] Speaker C: Lots of pancakes.
May I. May I come in, please? Did you hear the extra butter?
[00:37:35] Speaker E: Let me. Let me check the other door first. Here.
Let me think about it.
[00:37:41] Speaker B: It's your turn, Rob.
[00:37:42] Speaker D: He's gotta.
[00:37:43] Speaker B: He's gotta think about it.
[00:37:45] Speaker E: I think about it. Yeah. Let me go see. I think there's someone at the other door.
[00:37:50] Speaker D: Hello?
[00:37:54] Speaker A: Knock, knock, Knock, knock.
[00:37:57] Speaker C: Hi.
[00:37:58] Speaker E: Hi. Who this?
[00:38:01] Speaker C: I have.
[00:38:02] Speaker A: I have jello shots for you if you let me in kindly, sir.
[00:38:09] Speaker E: Why didn't I just get nauseous and creeped out at the same time? That's weird.
[00:38:14] Speaker A: Cello shots.
[00:38:16] Speaker E: Cello shots? Yeah, just. That's a. It's a start.
Maybe this is needs to be. Do we need to sweeten this deal a bit more? I think this is sugar free jello. Yeah. Totals. We got total sugar free. Yeah, I got someone on the other side offering some pancakes and butter.
That sounds like a sweeter deal. Oh, oh, hang on. I think I'm hearing another knock at the door.
You stay here. I'll be back.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: Oh, okay.
[00:38:44] Speaker F: Hello.
[00:38:46] Speaker D: I have some crackling in my bag for you.
[00:38:51] Speaker E: Is it.
[00:38:53] Speaker D: This is me. I have some crackling. Crackling is soup.
Crackling Chicharronas. Chicharronas.
[00:39:03] Speaker C: Crackling pancakes with extra butter.
[00:39:08] Speaker B: Lots and lots of butter.
[00:39:10] Speaker A: Can eat.
[00:39:11] Speaker C: Please, will you let me in?
[00:39:13] Speaker E: What? Why is everything food?
Some monster trucks or something. I don't know.
[00:39:20] Speaker D: Yo, I have some crackling over here.
[00:39:24] Speaker B: All right. You're gonna let any of us in?
[00:39:26] Speaker A: Jello shots.
[00:39:27] Speaker E: Oh, let me. Let me ask one more question.
[00:39:31] Speaker B: There's a trophy. There's a trophy on the line here. So.
[00:39:34] Speaker E: Yeah, it's the same question for each of you.
[00:39:37] Speaker C: Okay.
Yes.
[00:39:39] Speaker E: Well, it's the same question.
[00:39:41] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:39:42] Speaker E: What is your purpose?
[00:39:46] Speaker F: To feed you.
[00:39:47] Speaker E: What are you here for?
[00:39:48] Speaker B: To feed you pancakes with extra Butter.
[00:39:51] Speaker E: Okay, maybe one more name. One more what? Name.
What is your name?
[00:39:59] Speaker B: Grab Rumpelstiltskin.
[00:40:03] Speaker E: Dread rumpelstiltskin and grab. Grr. E.B.
[00:40:08] Speaker A: greb.
[00:40:10] Speaker D: My name is.
My name is Jermaine.
[00:40:14] Speaker E: I have this. I have this, like, odd feeling, like I need to go arm myself and lock myself in a room somewhere and call for help or cry. I don't know.
[00:40:26] Speaker B: That's that unsettling. That's that unsettling fear of dread.
[00:40:29] Speaker E: It's very unsettling, and it's a real skill of unsettlingness. So I'm gonna pass.
[00:40:36] Speaker A: I'm on all three.
[00:40:37] Speaker E: I'm gonna zoom off.
[00:40:38] Speaker A: I'm cold.
[00:40:39] Speaker E: Yeah. I'm gonna. I'm gonna zoom off, like.
[00:40:42] Speaker B: All right.
[00:40:42] Speaker E: Like our reporter friend did and leave you all out in the cold and take my chances.
[00:40:47] Speaker D: I. I don't blame you.
[00:40:48] Speaker A: I'm gonna die out here, Danny.
[00:40:51] Speaker E: Well, let me in. You should have. You should have thought different of your game. So you're welcome to take those buses back to where you came from.
[00:40:59] Speaker B: You guys ready to move on?
[00:41:00] Speaker D: Yeah. I should have said Boudin.
[00:41:03] Speaker A: Boudin.
[00:41:05] Speaker B: Northwest Curiosity Society presents Name, not smell.
All right.
Rob has brought in a smell, and Rob has not participated in a lot of it.
[00:41:20] Speaker A: He's shaking it.
[00:41:22] Speaker B: That's not a good sign.
[00:41:23] Speaker E: He's shaking it up. Yeah. You guys aren't going to need Narcan. I feel like, after this.
[00:41:27] Speaker A: All right, I'm scared.
[00:41:29] Speaker B: I'll go first.
[00:41:30] Speaker A: I think I'm losing my sandals and shaking so much.
[00:41:33] Speaker E: I want. I want to go first. Yeah.
[00:41:37] Speaker B: Is there some reasons there's, like, steam or mist or smoke coming off of it?
[00:41:42] Speaker D: It's just a white, creamy substance.
[00:41:44] Speaker E: Don't worry about.
[00:41:47] Speaker B: Do I look at it or just.
[00:41:48] Speaker A: No.
[00:41:49] Speaker E: Okay. Happy Saturday.
[00:41:51] Speaker A: Close your eyes.
[00:41:55] Speaker B: It's not bad. It's kind of pleasant.
[00:41:57] Speaker E: Well, he didn't die, so. Yeah, it's gonna be awkward.
[00:42:01] Speaker B: Let me smell one more time.
I don't know.
[00:42:07] Speaker D: I'm gonna let Tab smell it, too.
[00:42:08] Speaker B: Tab will get it right away. Yeah, he's gonna be like.
[00:42:13] Speaker E: He's gonna be like. It's blinker fluid.
A 1978 Porsche Cayenne.
[00:42:19] Speaker D: Don't say it right away.
Tab's going to know.
[00:42:23] Speaker B: Yeah, it smells like. The only thing I can say is it smells like a scented.
Sometimes you get those scented Kleenexes.
[00:42:38] Speaker E: I don't like.
[00:42:40] Speaker B: It's a. It's a bit of.
[00:42:41] Speaker E: It's like a white.
[00:42:41] Speaker B: It's a bit of a.
[00:42:43] Speaker A: It's Kind of a minty smell?
[00:42:45] Speaker B: Florally.
Floral.
[00:42:48] Speaker E: Mental. Florally. Is it like a wipe?
[00:42:50] Speaker B: Like a, A baby wipe?
[00:42:53] Speaker D: Nope.
[00:42:54] Speaker B: I get, I give up.
[00:42:55] Speaker D: Yeah, no, I'll give you a hint.
[00:42:57] Speaker A: No, no, wait.
[00:42:57] Speaker B: Okay, no, wait.
[00:42:58] Speaker A: I'm just saying it's kind of a minty.
[00:43:02] Speaker E: Minty?
[00:43:02] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, not even so much mint. I mean, almost like an herb. Kind of strong.
[00:43:07] Speaker B: Herbs.
[00:43:14] Speaker A: It's some kind of herb. I think oil.
[00:43:17] Speaker E: Cloves.
[00:43:20] Speaker B: I'm saying baby wipe.
[00:43:21] Speaker A: No, it's not cloves.
[00:43:22] Speaker E: Maybe it's like parsley.
[00:43:24] Speaker A: Yeah, kind of, kind of, kind of.
[00:43:28] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:43:28] Speaker A: I don't know which one. I'm terrible with herbs, so.
I don't know. I'm. It's an herb. I'm thinking organic.
[00:43:37] Speaker D: Tab, you Parsley are correct.
[00:43:43] Speaker A: I just don't know the herb.
[00:43:45] Speaker B: It's parsley.
[00:43:46] Speaker F: It is
[00:43:49] Speaker D: a spice or an herb.
[00:43:53] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:43:54] Speaker D: The H is silent.
[00:43:55] Speaker A: Oregano.
[00:43:55] Speaker D: The H is silent.
[00:43:58] Speaker B: Harford.
[00:43:59] Speaker E: Herb. Herb.
[00:44:04] Speaker A: The H is silent.
[00:44:05] Speaker D: No on herbalist.
Herb.
[00:44:08] Speaker E: Herb. Herb.
[00:44:08] Speaker B: Herb.
[00:44:09] Speaker E: Herb.
[00:44:09] Speaker A: It's an herb.
[00:44:11] Speaker E: Herb is the word.
[00:44:15] Speaker A: So what are, I don't know, like an oregano.
[00:44:18] Speaker F: Boom.
[00:44:19] Speaker D: Nailed it.
He got it.
[00:44:25] Speaker E: Wow.
[00:44:26] Speaker A: Don't get it on his keyboard.
[00:44:28] Speaker E: Oh, bravo.
[00:44:30] Speaker D: I, I, you're here. I was gonna do basil, but I
[00:44:34] Speaker A: would have got that one.
[00:44:35] Speaker D: That's how I figured. I honestly, I, I was like, tab's gonna get this one right away. So I did. That's what I did.
[00:44:43] Speaker E: All right, you guys had a horrible experience with baseball.
[00:44:46] Speaker B: Tab gets the trophy. There you go. Tab, you want to say something? You want to say something to your people?
[00:44:51] Speaker A: I just want to thank all my friends, my family for supporting me all these years.
[00:44:57] Speaker B: All right, you ready?
[00:44:59] Speaker A: Mom, dad, thank you for the nose.
[00:45:01] Speaker B: You guys ready to move on?
[00:45:03] Speaker E: Yeah, let's do it.
[00:45:06] Speaker C: All right.
[00:45:08] Speaker B: All right, students, classes in session.
[00:45:11] Speaker E: Sit down and shut up.
[00:45:15] Speaker B: All right, Danny, what do you got for us? Class is in session.
[00:45:18] Speaker E: Just like that, huh?
Well, thank you.
All right, well, today we're going to talk about the basics of investigating haunted locations.
The goal is to walk our listeners through the professional, step by step process of conducting haunted location investigations, balancing paranormal techniques with solid investigative discipline.
Like with any investigation, you probably start with a little research, although we'll talk about that in a second. But that research could include either historical records, witness accounts, local folklore, getting to know the location, importance of knowing the history there is key. Now, that said, some folks almost do something similar to a blind study, where part of that research, maybe you go in not knowing those details, but you can have someone do that. I think part of this pre investigation research also include a debris of sorts. Sometimes the buildings that we go into are not the most ideal and in the best shape. And so make sure you have a good idea of the safety concerns that might be present in that building and or location that you're going to. So be mindful of that you could go into again these locations without any background information.
I think it's worthwhile to have someone do the investigation for you if you're going to do that so that you know in the end you can compare your experiences to what the investigation, the pre investigation research yields baseline readings. Once you get on site, it'd be good to kind of orient yourself to the location, understand again those safety concerns and also identify any baseline readings. Sometimes in our investigations we use temperature. If you guys remember back early on in some of our.
We're pretty good taking baseline readings. With one result I got an average temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, whatever that is. EMF sound levels. Being mindful of. Yeah, that is high.
[00:47:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:43] Speaker E: Being mindful of the sound levels, we've. I recall an investigation we did in Virginia City that had an active.
I think that was the. Was that the washcloth? I think we did.
There was an active kind of bar downstairs that a lot of the folks from the neighborhood came to visit or from the town and from out of town. There was an event going on.
Was that.
[00:48:09] Speaker A: I remember we went down under the TLC bar.
[00:48:13] Speaker B: No, no, no, I know what you're talking about. That was in right out. Yeah.
[00:48:19] Speaker E: Virginia City at the Washable Club.
[00:48:22] Speaker B: The Washville, I think it was.
[00:48:23] Speaker E: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But there was a lot of sound outside and so that, that kind of polluted the investigation a bit. Yeah, but just being mindful of that and, and you know, taking your best readings that you can or understanding what things might pollute your environment from lights, sound, anything else that might be around.
Equipment essential.
[00:48:48] Speaker B: And that's another reason why, you know, people think that investigators do their investigations at night because that's when it's most active. And that's not necessarily the case.
You do it at night because you're getting, you're getting much less of that. Background noises and cars going by and, and stuff like that.
[00:49:07] Speaker E: More sterile environment.
[00:49:08] Speaker A: Plus it's scarier in the dark.
[00:49:10] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:49:10] Speaker B: Plus.
[00:49:11] Speaker E: Yeah, it just reminded me going into the Goldfield Hotel was right off, right on a highway. And even though we were in the middle of the night, you still get light pollution and sound pollution from, you know, trucks Going by making their way through Nevada equipment. Good to know.
And this can be informed by your pre investigation search and or you know, baseline what you know about the location, but making sure you're packing out what specifically you might need for a particular location. As an example, you look at audio recorders, emf, there's cameras. What type of cameras, drones, motion sensor things that you can use to validate some of your experiences. Right. We. We have our own personal experiences and sometimes we can use these equipment pieces to help enhance those senses that we have and come out and validate some of our findings. Also document helpful to have a notepad, things like that that you can jot down anything so don't mismember or have difficulty finding as we know.
[00:50:26] Speaker B: The other thing about the equipment, if I can jump in just for a second too.
[00:50:30] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:50:30] Speaker B: It's important, and I'm saying this from experience, my own experience. It's important to learn how to use the equipment that you have because we have a lot of equipment and all of it does different things.
[00:50:46] Speaker A: And it was a lot at one time too.
[00:50:48] Speaker B: Yeah, a lot of new. Yeah. A lot of new equipment all at one time.
[00:50:53] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:50:53] Speaker B: Thanks to all those wonderful companies that just send us stuff for us to.
[00:50:57] Speaker D: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. We want to thank all of them right now.
[00:51:01] Speaker E: Go ahead, Rob all of the sponsors.
[00:51:03] Speaker B: I don't definitely.
[00:51:04] Speaker D: Where's my notes?
[00:51:05] Speaker B: Definitely not paranoid.
[00:51:07] Speaker D: Where's my notes?
[00:51:08] Speaker A: I don't.
[00:51:11] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. You know, make sure that you use it, test it, know how, you know, know how it works. Make sure that. That it's fresh batteries, freshly charged batteries. Because I mean, we've learned that when you're at paranormal locations, they. They can drain.
They can drain your batteries.
[00:51:29] Speaker D: Well, yeah, the infamous Washoe Hotel where we. Everything. Yeah, everything was charged. We walk into the main area and they go dead.
[00:51:40] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:51:40] Speaker E: Dead. Immediately. Multiple devices dead.
[00:51:43] Speaker D: That was crazy.
[00:51:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:51:45] Speaker D: Tell me, tell me there's not something.
[00:51:49] Speaker E: Right.
[00:51:49] Speaker D: Tell me there's not something there. Tab.
I can't tell you, you disbeliever. But come on, you know, everything was charged. We charged it all night, in fact. And then we plugged it in while we were there and they were charged and we walked in and boom, dead.
[00:52:09] Speaker A: I blame China.
[00:52:09] Speaker D: Explain that.
[00:52:11] Speaker A: I blame China. China.
[00:52:12] Speaker D: Would you explain that?
[00:52:14] Speaker A: China.
[00:52:14] Speaker B: Stick that in your pie hole and smoke it.
Or pipe and pull smoke.
[00:52:20] Speaker D: Yeah. No.
[00:52:20] Speaker E: Yeah. But not before an investigation. Right.
[00:52:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:24] Speaker D: I want to go back there actually.
[00:52:26] Speaker E: Only after. I think that would be great.
[00:52:28] Speaker B: I don't. That's one location. I Do not want to go back to.
[00:52:31] Speaker D: Well, not since somebody not gonna mention any Pete, no guns.
Oh Pete, no guns anyway.
But somebody may or may not have borrowed a brick and bad luck happened.
[00:52:47] Speaker A: It was returned.
[00:52:48] Speaker D: I know it was returned, but bad luck happened.
[00:52:51] Speaker B: Yeah. Never, never take anything, even if it's a break anyway.
[00:52:55] Speaker E: Exactly. Be respectful on the note of equipment by the way, be mindful of choosing the right equipment for the job.
One example I use, we attempted. Well, I attempted to use when we visited the Preston Castle in I own California.
California.
[00:53:18] Speaker B: I tried one more parabolic mic one more time.
[00:53:20] Speaker E: I own California. I own.
I tried to use the parabolic mic indoors and that really wasn't good, you know, didn't fit for the investigation. It didn't serve us well and it just caused echoes and bouncing off the walls, things like that. And so be mindful choosing the right tools for the job and the combination of tools, your EMF meters are going to be triggered by.
Remember the experiment we had test oil in the Goldfield Hotel where you know, we had the Tesla coil going and then the smoke going to identify.
But an EMF in that space probably wouldn't have been the best tool for the job. So just be mindful of what you choose. So interviewing witnesses, when you get to that point, if you get to that point or someone doing that for you, asking open ended questions, distinguish emotion from fact, being mindful of what's being said is it. How is it validated? Give them the opportunity to ask or answer questions in a non leading way and really trying to drive to the facts of the case. So again, talking through, identifying the hazards,
[00:54:39] Speaker B: nothing but the facts.
[00:54:40] Speaker E: Yes, just the facts, ma'. Am. Just the facts.
[00:54:42] Speaker B: Just the facts, ma'.
[00:54:42] Speaker E: Am.
Just making sure that you're identifying any hazards, marking out any hotspots that you know of ahead of time and getting your bearings.
You want is to be traveling the hallways of the Washoe Club on the third floor and make too many left turns and get lost. Ask me how I know and it makes it hard to run back to your your group when you get a little scared. Rob figured that one out though he right where we were and evidence collection, EVPs, anomalies, temperature drops, logging those things with timestamps, be okay with, with talking. If you're doing a voice recorder, talk to the voice recorder, talk about your experience, your times, but then also sitting in silence too when you need but get those things annotated so you know exactly when and where you are and gives you a little bit easier time to go Back when you have to review potentially hours worth of information and evidence.
Start with mindset of debunking. Yeah, start with a mindset of debunking first.
[00:55:56] Speaker A: Yeah, it does. Yeah, it does get really complicated. Especially when you have a large group.
[00:56:01] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:56:02] Speaker A: Trying to keep track of everybody. And if it's, you know, well, I will know.
[00:56:07] Speaker D: I, I will note that whenever you hear Tab say oh boy, you know you got something.
[00:56:15] Speaker A: Yeah, it's not a boy, it's oh
[00:56:18] Speaker D: boy, oh boy, oh boy. Nobody, nobody can say it the way you do. Tab. That's your signature. You trademark that.
[00:56:25] Speaker A: Oh boy.
[00:56:26] Speaker D: Oh, that was a little. That was a little.
[00:56:29] Speaker E: There you go.
[00:56:32] Speaker D: Yeah, that was cartoon pornish.
[00:56:38] Speaker E: Yeah.
Debunking first. Start with the minds debunking. Eliminate natural causes before, before claiming paranormal. Maybe there's a part going on downstairs.
Yeah.
[00:56:53] Speaker A: That was not me.
[00:56:54] Speaker E: And you want to know that that's causing sound pollution in your investigation.
Be methodical about your post investigation review and make sure that you are taking the time to go through every piece of evidence. Don't overwhelm yourself with multiplexers. And what do we have? Multiplexers, cameras.
[00:57:18] Speaker B: And we have so much equipment that I don't think we, I don't think we've honestly reviewed 80% of what we have.
[00:57:24] Speaker E: Yeah, probably not. But just be prepared to invest it is time reviewing that data after the fact.
Be mindful of ethics and respect to the property that you're visiting.
Remember, property rights for sure. Don't, don't commit crimes.
Be mindful of destroying or, or potential harmful effects that you can have on historical places and get permission.
There are some people that do urban exploring and those type of things, but you don't want to get yourself caught up or in a situation where you're committing crimes and, or violating the law. So. Or I guess that's the same thing. Or damaging historical sites.
And then last, just report your findings. Make sure it's factual, unembellished results.
That's kind of why we got into it, you know, to kind of be there firsthand after watching many, many episodes of unnamed ghost adventures. Whoops. Shows that, you know, we had questions about how often someone got possessed, you know, at certain locations. Well, you know, our mindset is let's go see.
Let's go see if it's something, you know, that we need to investigate and, or, or can validate. Right. And so anyway, what other nuggets might you all have? I know we've kind of been chatting along the way, but anything else we should share with the group.
[00:58:54] Speaker D: No, that one. That was pretty, pretty good there, Danny.
[00:58:57] Speaker E: I wrote it myself.
[00:58:58] Speaker D: You. You wrote it yourself? No, no, no. Those are definitely some key points. I really liked the fact that you mentioned especially some, like, historic places that are very, well, historic like that. I mean. Yeah, to preserve the area and whatnot. Because, you know, some of those things are. Areas are just so old that if you mess it up then. Then, you know, it's. It's gone forever. And I think preserving those areas is definitely important.
[00:59:28] Speaker B: And I think, you know, kind of, kind of one of our number one rules is, you know, don't, don't be, don't try to intentionally freak them, the people out with fake stuff. And we've done, historically, in the past, we've done a lot of paid events where guests will come and join us on investigations.
And we always let everybody know, look, first of all, this isn't Disneyland. So you're not going to walk into a room and something's going to happen. There's no guarantees anything's going to happen. But first and foremost, we're not going to do anything to intentionally tried to scare you or, you know, make something up. You just have to be honest. And if nothing happens, nothing happens. I don't know how many investigations we've done where there's just a lot, absolutely nothing. Nothing at location. The funny thing is at locations where they're notoriously haunted and nothing happens. But then there's other locations where like, oh, nothing's going to happen here. And then it's like off the charts, you know, but just, you know, just don't try to scare people. Don't try to scare the people that are on your team.
[01:00:35] Speaker D: Especially like how we've had, you know, outside people that come and have joined us and they're there for their own experience and whatnot. And yeah, let's not, I mean, ruin it. Give them everything that, you know, all the tools and everything to see and hear or see, you know, even in that time, smell.
[01:00:58] Speaker B: Now when the investigation, when the investigation is over, that's fair game. That's fair game to freak your buddy
[01:01:05] Speaker E: out a couple times or two and keep the cameras rolling during that as well. Sometimes your blooper reel is.
[01:01:12] Speaker B: Yeah, if we had, if we had recorded Petey's yell.
[01:01:18] Speaker A: That wasn't yell, it was a scream.
[01:01:22] Speaker B: So awkward. I wish we had that.
Anyway, any additional thoughts on the Black Eyed Children?
[01:01:32] Speaker D: I would say whoever came up with this or if it, you know, whoever saw the first one or, you know, Whatever it seems. Seems if it's, you know, it's made up mostly what I'm seeing reading, whatnot, but whoever did, kudos.
They are creepy. Creepy again.
[01:01:53] Speaker E: Maybe we should make our own version of it.
[01:01:56] Speaker B: Was Brian. Brian Bethel, by the way. He's the first one. Yeah, the guy from Abilene.
[01:02:00] Speaker D: Oh, wow.
[01:02:01] Speaker E: Let's create an nwcs.
[01:02:03] Speaker D: You know, I'm gonna have a bad,
[01:02:05] Speaker E: bad Purple Eyed Children or something.
[01:02:08] Speaker B: Speaking of which, I love your background, Danny. I love how you're kicking up the. The background game.
[01:02:13] Speaker D: Yeah. Every episode.
[01:02:14] Speaker B: Every episode. He's got, like, this for the episode. That's great. I love it.
[01:02:20] Speaker E: I try, I try.
[01:02:21] Speaker B: But fortunately, you don't have to look at those creepy kids staring at you
[01:02:25] Speaker D: because they're looking over your shoulders.
[01:02:27] Speaker B: Your back is tall.
[01:02:28] Speaker E: I can. I can see them. They're. They're sitting right over my shoulders here.
[01:02:32] Speaker D: Yeah.
[01:02:33] Speaker A: And then you got Slenderman in the back.
[01:02:35] Speaker B: That's the stuff that. That's the stuff that's coming in are made of.
[01:02:39] Speaker E: Yeah.
[01:02:40] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:02:41] Speaker B: All right.
[01:02:44] Speaker A: Is that a wrap?
[01:02:45] Speaker B: Thank you, everybody, for listening to this amazing episode, Black Eyed Children.
Thank you, Rob, for spilling your drinks all over the place. It's empty. Thank you, Danny, for all of your content.
[01:03:00] Speaker D: Danny, it's always a pleasure.
[01:03:01] Speaker B: Thank you, Tap, for doing all that fabulous research.
[01:03:04] Speaker A: Oh, boy.
[01:03:06] Speaker B: Rob, thank you for the smell.
We'll always remember. We'll always remember this smell.
[01:03:13] Speaker D: Hey, it wasn't a bad.
[01:03:14] Speaker A: It could have been. It could have been bad.
[01:03:16] Speaker B: Be sure to, like, follow. Tweet us.
Instagram, Insta. Tweet us.
[01:03:21] Speaker A: We have none of that stuff.
[01:03:23] Speaker B: Face. Facebook, tweet.
[01:03:25] Speaker D: You know, we really should have got on the Tik Tok bandwagon.
[01:03:28] Speaker A: Yeah, no, thank you.
[01:03:30] Speaker D: No, I mean, for like, 10 minutes when it was popular, like. Oh, we could have like, got, like 1 million so subscribers or something in a second.
[01:03:40] Speaker E: Oh, boy.
[01:03:40] Speaker D: Bye.
[01:03:42] Speaker A: Bye.
[01:03:43] Speaker F: Bye.
Bye.
[01:03:51] Speaker D: Later.
